OK, so Iíve been a little remiss lately and havenít posted updates as frequently as many of you would like. Sorry, but the opportunity to spend even more time with Megan has prevented me from writing. A little selfish on my part, but then, time with Megan is a treasure!
On Tuesday 22 June, I was with the family as we sat on the lawn in a small park next to St. Margaretís Church in Rumford to listen to another presentation by the East Providence Community Chorus. The music was great and it was phenomenal to see so many friends and neighbors coming up to see Megan. It was as if the entire town was part of Meganís family!
Of significant note is the fact that this day, June 22'nd was also the 1'st anniversary of Meganís initial diagnosis. So, it was even more reassuring to be surrounded by so many family members and friends.
The past year is full of memories. Some of them are frightening, some are joyous. Some moments passed so quickly, while others were grueling trials of patience, worry, confusion, despair, pain and tears. Throughout the past year, and everything which has happened, I know that Mark and Nancy have been overwhelmed by the thousands of people who have stood with them, prayed with them, and have lent their support in various ways.
During the past few weeks, Meganís lab reports have been indicating an increased possibility of a return of cancer cells. Although the risks have always been there, and will always be there, one would have hoped for something better.
Megan, her Family and a few friends have made a habit of attending the religious services at the Chapel at Hasbro Childrens Hospital. Although encouraged to attend many times, I have "begged off" claiming to not be a publicly religious person. With the lab tests returning less than favorable results, I thought that maybe it was time to attend one of these services.
Sunday morning (27 June) found me sitting in the Chapel for the service. Later that week, Meganís test results came back, and the levels had come down,...... much more favorable. I canít tell you that my presence had anything to do with this positive turn of events,..... but Iím not going to risk finding out.
During this past week the Golf Tournament was held as a fund raising event. It was a smashing success! There was not a place left on the course for an additional golfer! Despite the heat and humidity, people traveled from numerous other states just to support the Megan Hayward Fund. The day ended with a fabulous dinner, silent auctions, live auctions, and a great time was had by all. What was extra special was the fact that Megan and her family were there, and many people who had never met Megan got the opportunity to meet her. Needless to say, Megan was in her splendor, walking around with a cup of goldfish crackers, smiling, laughing,.....doing all the typical things youíd expect a 3-year old to do. For many people who had only seen pictures of Megan on this web site,.... they now got to see the smile in the eyes of this little girl. Meeting Megan in person is truly an experience!
To all of those who organized the Golf Tournament, and to all of those who came out for the event,....Thank You! We will be posting some concluding data on the Tournament and the Road Race sometime in the future. Also, we will be posting some information on upcoming events as soon as information becomes available.
Finally,.... it has been a year now since Mark & Nancy received the frightening news about Megan. Nothing will ever be the same again. There is no going back to the innocence and security of the past. There is only going forward, knowing that each day is a gift. But during the past year, all of us have been transformed. We have all learned a little more about how precious life is. We have all learned how to share in the tears and the smiles. We have watched as "Meganís Candle" united people from across the country. Many of us have learned how important a prayer can be. Let us hope that Megan has taught us how to open our hearts for all the other "Megans" in the world. On behalf of Mark and Nancy, Patrick, Kelsey and Megan,
"Thank You" and "God Bless You" for your prayers, love and support!!
